Birth of the mordern Olympics
It was against two cultural events that led the Olympics to revived into the modern Olympics in Athens in 1896, some 1,500 years after the end of the ancient Olympics in 393 A.D. One was the study of the Greek culture and the other the excavation of ancient Greek relics, particularly in the area of Olympia.

As Greek scholars advanced to Europe in the 14th and 15th centuries, study and education of the ancient Greek culture spread across Europe. The broad understanding and recognition of Greek culture led to and attempt to develop sports and physical fitness as part of education. Study of ancient Greece and interest in the ancient Olympics attracted a great enthusiasm from Germany, France, the Netherlands and Great Britain for the time from the end of the ancient Olympics in 393 A.D.
